For families and individuals alike, a safe place to live should be a leading priority when looking for a new home. With so many places in the country, however, researching the absolute safest places is a seriously daunting task. Fortunately, there are sites like Neighborhood Scout, who employ vast amounts of data and are able to rank numerous cities and towns — say, perhaps 100 – to make the search far easier.

Neighborhood Scout looked at townships with 25,000 or more people and ranked them according to the total number of property and violent crimes per 1,000 residents. The crimes examined include burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, murder, forcible rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault, the site said. “Data used for this research are 1. the number of total crimes reported to the FBI to have occurred in each city, and 2. the population of each city,” it added.

Of those 100, we chose the top ten ranked towns and cities to feature here. They’re ranked by the crime index score assigned to it by Neighborhood Scout.

10. Shrewsbury, Massachusetts

With a crime score of 86, the 36,048-resident town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts is the 10th safest town in the United States, according to the data from Neighborhood Scout. While violent crime is at the near-lowest on the list, at a rate of 0.17 per 1,000 people, property crime is higher, at 7.57 per 1,000. In Shrewsbury, the chances of being a victim of violent crime are exceptionally low, at 1 in 6,008, but the likelihood of being a victim of property related crimes – 1 in 132 — pushed Shrewsbury’s score down.

9. Ballwin, Missouri

Despite the state of Missouri having higher-than average violent crime and property crime rates, the 30,454-strong town of Ballwin falls well below the national medians for both. Violent crime rates are determined to be 0.59 per 1,000, while property related crimes were pegged at 7.09 per 1,000 — both well below the U.S. medians of 3.9 and 28.6, respectively. There’s a 1 in 1,692 chance of becoming the victim of violence in Ballwin, and a 1 in 141 chance of becoming the victim of a property crime.

8. Sammamish, Washington

The picturesque town of Sammamish, Washington, population 47,158, scores an 86 on Neighborhood Scout‘s crime index. It’s violent crime rate of 0.34 per 1,000 is unusually low — even compared to other towns listed here — but its property crime rate of 7.27 per 1,000 was high enough to move the city back to eighth place. The chances of becoming the victim of a violent crime is a lowly 1 in 2,947, while the odds for victimization of a property crime fall at 1 in 137. That compares to the national medians of 3.9 and 28.6, respectively.

7. Lexington, Massachusetts

Renowned for its historical significance, the quaint township of Lexington, Massachusetts and its 32,000 residents is also one of the safest towns in the country. It scored a crime index rating of 86, a violent crime rate of 0.41 per 1,000 people, and a property crime rate 7.06 per 1,000. There’s a 1 in 2,462 chance of becoming victim of a violent crime, but Lexington’s score was dragged down by the 1 in 142 chance of being a victim of a property crime.

6. Johns Creek, Georgia

Johns Creek Georgia, a small city of 80,037 as per the last census in 2010, scored an 88 for its crime index score with a rate of 0.54 violent crimes per 1,000 citizens, and 6.57 per 1,000 for property crimes. The likelihood of becoming a victim of violent crime in Johns Creek is about 1 in 1,861, but for property crimes, the odds are 1 in 152. However, for the latter, Georgia overall pegs the odds at 1 in 29.

5. Rancho Santa Margarita, California

The relatively small town of Rancho Santa Margarita, population 49,038, is the fifth-ranked safest in its class with a crime index score of 88 out of 100. It’s violent crime rate of 0.55 per 1,000 people falls well below the 3.9 national median, as does its property crime rate of 6.51 per 1,000, ranked well below the U.S. median of 28.6. The odds of becoming a victim of violent crime in Rancho Santa Margarita were determined to be 1 in 1,816, while the same metric was found to be 1 in 154 for property related crimes.

4. Greenwich, Connecticut

Greenwich, Connecticut is an affluent community of 61,948 that scored a respectable 90 points on the crime index out of 100. Violent crime is especially low, at 0.37, with odds of being a victim of such behaviors pegged at 1 in 2,693. Property crime is a tad higher, at 5.94, with odds of victimization for any given individual falling at 1 in 168. The national medians are 3.9 and 28.6, respectively, so Greenwich is still one of the safest towns in the U.S.

3. Parma, Ohio

The peaceful township of Parma, Ohio boasts a population of 80,963 and a crime index score of 90. Parma’s violent crime rate sits at 0.69, whilst its property crime rate sits at a lowly 5.57. Those are comfortably below the 3.9 and 28.6 medians of violent and property crime, respectively. For residents of Parma, there is a 1 in 1,446 chance of becoming the victim of a violent crime, and a 1 in 180 chance of being victim to a property-related crime.

2. Bergenfield, New Jersey

Bergenfield, New Jersey hits a crime index score of a solid 90, with violent crime rates measured at 0.7 against the national median’s 3.9. This implies your chances of becoming a victim of violent crime sit at 1 in 1,425; for property crime, Bergenfield scores a 5.47, still well below the national median of 28.6. The chances of falling victim to the latter are 1 in 183; for New Jersey as a whole, that number is 1 in 49.

1. Franklin, Massachusetts

Finally, the number one rated safest town in the United States is the picturesque town of Franklin, Massachusetts, with a crime index of 92 out of 100. Violent crime per 1,000 residents sits at .37, well below the national median of 3.9, Neighborhood Scout says. Similarly, Franklin’s property crime rate of 5.2 per 1,000 persons also sits well below the national median of 28.6. The odds of becoming a victim in Franklin is 1 in 2,678 for violence and 1 in 192 for a property crime.
